On an unusually chilly Southern California evening at the Hollywood Bowl, an audience of over 17,000 enjoyed the incomparable music of James Taylor. He performed with his All-Star Band in front of a sold-out crowd that was a tapestry of all ages. His music, spanning over fifty years, is considered iconic to generations of people around the world.
With charm and characteristic folksy humor, Taylor recounted how, in 1968, he auditioned for Paul McCartney and the late George Harrison. This was his first audition for Apple Studios in London. This historic meeting was the launching pad for Taylor’s illustrious career. Taylor signed his first recording with Apple Records where he released his self-titled debut album. It was the first recording for Apple Records by a non-British artist. His performance at the Hollywood Bowl was amazing. Taylor continued to enthrall the audience by performing many of his classic hits. The crowd sang along to Fire and Rain, Sweet Baby James, Shower the People, Carolina on My Mind, Copperline, The Secret of Life, Country Road, Mexico, and Steam Roller. Prior to singing Why I am Here, Taylor gave a touching tribute to his close friend, the late John Belushi for whom he wrote that song.
Taylor’s talented All-Star Band included his son, Henry, Kate
Markowitz and Dorial Holley as vocals, Andrea Zonn on fiddle
and vocals, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Steve Gadd on drums,
Dean Parks on guitar, and Kevin Hays on keyboard.
The colorful lighting and special effects enhanced each song.
The amazing acoustics of the Hollywood Bowl was the perfect
venue to listen to Taylor’s melodic voice and music.
James Taylor weaves a masterpiece within his compositions,
vocal ability, and guitar performance. His songwriting seems
very personal yet universal. His various life experiences are
interwoven into his songs. Taylor’s music is a true reflection of
the 1970’s and 1980’s, however, it is timeless. His vocal talent
has endured for decades and is as crisp as it was in 1971! He
performed with energy and sharp wit. His unique lyrics, voice,
and music have and will endure the test of time, both for us,
and for future generations.
